Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The group consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. The band’s heavy, guitar-driven sound, rooted in blues and psychedelia on their early albums, has earned them recognition as one of the progenitors of heavy metal, though their unique style drew from a wide variety of influences, including folk music.

After changing their name from the New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin signed a deal with Atlantic Records that afforded them considerable artistic freedom. Although the group was initially unpopular with critics, they achieved significant commercial success with albums such as Led Zeppelin (1969), Led Zeppelin II (1969), Led Zeppelin III (1970), their untitled fourth album (1971), Houses of the Holy (1973), and Physical Graffiti (1975). Their fourth album, which features the track “Stairway to Heaven”, is among the most popular and influential works in rock music, and it helped to secure the group’s popularity.

Page wrote most of Led Zeppelin’s music, particularly early in their career, while Plant generally supplied the lyrics. Jones’ keyboard-based compositions later became central to the group’s catalogue, which featured increasing experimentation. The latter half of their career saw a series of record-breaking tours that earned the group a reputation for excess and debauchery. Although they remained commercially and critically successful, their output and touring schedule were limited during the late 1970s, and the group disbanded following Bonham’s death from alcohol-related asphyxia in 1980. In the decades that followed, the surviving members sporadically collaborated and participated in one-off Led Zeppelin reunions. The most successful of these was the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London, with Jason Bonham taking his late father’s place behind the drums.

Led Zeppelin are widely considered one of the most successful, innovative, and influential rock groups in history. They are one of the best-selling music artists in the history of audio recording; various sources estimate the group’s record sales at 200 to 300 million units worldwide. With RIAA-certified sales of 111.5 million units, they are the second-best-selling band in the United States. Each of their nine studio albums placed on the Billboard Top 10 and six reached the number-one spot. Rolling Stone magazine described them as “the heaviest band of all time”, “the biggest band of the ’70s”, and “unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history” They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995; the museum’s biography of the band states that they were “as influential” during the 1970s as the Beatles were during the 1960s.

Despite being the premiere of heavy metal, Jeff Beck’s Truth has never quite carried its reputation the way the early albums by Led Zeppelin did, or even Cream’s two most popular LPs, mostly as a result of the erratic nature of the guitarist’s subsequent work. Time has muted some of its daring, radical nature, elements of which were appropriated by practically every metal band (and most arena rock bands) that followed. Truth was almost as groundbreaking and influential a record as the first Beatles, Rolling Stones, or Who albums. Its attributes weren’t all new — Cream and Jimi Hendrix had been moving in similar directions — but the combination was: the wailing, heart-stoppingly dramatic vocalizing by Rod Stewart, the thunderous rhythm section of Ron Wood’s bass and Mickey Waller’s drums, and Beck’s blistering lead guitar, which sounds like his amp is turned up to 13 and ready to short out. Beck opens the proceedings in a strikingly bold manner, using his old Yardbirds hit “Shapes of Things” as a jumping-off point, deliberately rebuilding the song from the ground up so it sounds closer to Howlin’ Wolf. There are lots of unexpected moments on this record: a bone-pounding version of Willie Dixon’s “You Shook Me”; a version of Jerome Kern’s “Ol’ Man River” done as a slow electric blues; a brief plunge into folk territory with a solo acoustic guitar version of “Greensleeves” (which was intended as filler but audiences loved); the progressive blues of “Beck’s Bolero”; the extended live “Blues Deluxe”; and “I Ain’t Superstitious,” a blazing reworking of another Willie Dixon song. It was a triumph — a number 15 album in America, astoundingly good for a band that had been utterly unknown in the U.S. just six months earlier — and a very improbable success. ― Allmusic

“My Only True Friend,” from Southern Blood, Gregg Allman’s final album, is a cipher, much like the man himself — private, reserved, and complex. Though twin, ringing, blues-drenched guitars introduce it, the song just as quickly morphs into a ballad: “You and I both know, this river will surely flow to an end/Keep me in your heart…I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul…But you and I both know, the road is my only true friend….” The blues guitars cascade in again, adding resonance. This is the only track here that Allman co-wrote, but it’s fine enough to join the shortlist of his classics — “Midnight Rider,” “Melissa,” “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” etc.

When Allman and producer Don Was commenced work on Southern Blood, the clock was already ticking. The singer had undergone liver transplant surgery, but the cancer had returned. Tunes and charts were painstakingly chosen. Allman’s road band and some friends were invited to FAME Studios at Muscle Shoals, the same place that Duane Allman had recorded his initial Stax sessions, and where, according to Was, the Allman Brothers had their first rehearsals. Following “My Only True Friend” is a stunning reading of Tim Buckley’s “Once I Was,” which accentuates its surrender, followed by the bitter acceptance in Bob Dylan’s “Going Going Gone”: “I’m closing the book on pages and text/And I don’t really care what happens next….” But it’s not so cut and dried. That acceptance is balanced by a Celtic-tinged, even hopeful read of the Grateful Dead’s hymn-like “Black Muddy River.”

But Allman didn’t let his blues and R&B roots to be scattered by the winds. He delivers Willie Dixon’s “I Love the Life I Live” with passion, fire, and humor as he celebrates hedonism. In Lowell George’s “Willin’,” Allman looks back without surrender; he expresses the desire to keep rolling along even when discovering the highway’s dead end in his headlights. He offers Johnny Jenkins’ hoodoo blues “Blind Bats and Swamp Rats” from 1970’s Capricorn-issued Ton Ton Macoute with vengeance, as if to make up for lost time. (He was the only Allman member who didn’t play on the original). Muscle Shoals makes its voice heard in Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn’s 1967 deep soul single “Out of Left Field.” Allman imbues it with grit, heart, tenderness, and power enhanced by backing vocals from the McCrary Sisters and a powerful three-piece horn section. Jackson Browne’s “Song for Adam,” written for a lost comrade, features the songwriter on backing vocals. In delivering this song, Gregg is obviously singing about Duane, whose premature death shaped his own life. Greg Leisz’s whining pedal steel becomes another singing voice, especially at the end when Allman gets too choked up to deliver the final two lines — and Was didn’t even try to make him. Southern Blood is almost perfect; there isn’t a better final album Allman could have made. It belongs on the shelf between 1973’s Laid Back and the mysteriously withdrawn but amazing One More Try: An Anthology. ― Allmusic

Second Helping brought Lynyrd Skynyrd mass success and for the follow-up they offered Nuthin’ Fancy. It was a self-deprecating title for a record that may have offered more of the same, at least on the surface, but was still nearly peerless as a Southern rock record. The biggest difference with this record is that the band, through touring, has become heavier and harder, fitting right in with the heavy album rock bands of the mid-’70s. The second notable difference is that Ronnie Van Zant may have been pressed for material, since there are several songs here that are just good generic rockers. But he and Skynyrd prove that what makes a great band great is how they treat generic material, and Skynyrd makes the whole of Nuthin’ Fancy feel every bit as convincing as their first two records. For one, the record has a rawer edge than Second Helping, which helps make the slight preponderance of predictable (but not bad) material easy to accept, since it all sounds so good. Then there’s the fact that many of these eight songs still showcase Van Zant at the top of his game, whether it’s the storming opener “Saturday Night Special,” “Railroad Song,” “On the Hunt,” or the rollicking “Whiskey Rock-a-Roller.” Yes, this does pale in comparison with its predecessors, but most hard rock bands would give their left arm for a record that swaggers and hits as hard as Nuthin’ Fancy. ― Allmusic

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band — they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s redneck image tended to obscure the songwriting skills of their leader, Ronnie Van Zant. Throughout the band’s early records, Van Zant demonstrated a knack for lyrical detail and a down-to-earth honesty that had more in common with country than rock & roll. During the height of Skynyrd’s popularity in the mid-’70s, however, Van Zant’s talents were overshadowed by the group’s gritty, greasy blues-rock. Sadly, it wasn’t until he was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1977 along with two other bandmembers that many listeners began to realize his talents. Skynyrd split up after the plane crash, but they reunited a decade later, becoming a popular concert act during the early ’90s. ― Allmusic

The compilation Big Guns: The Very Best of Rory Gallagher is one of the ways assembling a retrospective should be done. This set offers a portrait of a true guitar hero and songwriter, one whose flash never outweighed his substance, one whose work is so utterly and dazzlingly fresh it not only stands the test of time, but transcends it. Being an Irish bluesman was tough for Gallagher, especially when he began his career in the 1960s. When he passed away in 1995 at the age of 47, he left behind 17 albums and a legacy of hard traditional blues and big, knotty blues-rock. These two discs are the first retrospective to span the entire length of his career, from his time with the power trio Taste to his signature albums like Calling Card and Deuce, through to his final acoustic album, Wheels Within Wheels (released posthumously). There are many gems here beginning with “Born on the Wrong Side of Time” by Taste, and unreleased live versions of the traditional “Bullfrog Blues” and Junior Wells’ “Messin with the Kid.” The stone killers are cuts that Gallagher’s fans recognize him for, such as “Tatoo’d Lady,” the title number from Calling Card, or “I’m Not Awake Yet” from Deuce. There are also fine moments from later in his career as well, such as “Kickback City” from Defender and “Bad Penny” from Top Priority (though it would have been better if the compilers had picked “Philby” or “Follow Me.”) “Sinner Boy” is here from Taste’s Live at the Isle of Wight, along with “What’s Goin’ On” (not the Marvin Gaye tune). While fans may quibble about individual selections, the only glaring omission is the absence of the stellar “Walk on Hot Coals.” The package is fine enough with numerous autobiographical quotes from Gallagher, a slew of good photos, and a good liner essay by David Sinclair. While it may be the tried and true devotees that seek this out ultimately, the music listener who would most benefit is the one interested in the evolution of blues or in fine guitar players. For the latter, Big Guns would be nothing short of a revelation. ― Allmusic

Tom Petty has been fronting the Heartbreakers off and on (mostly on) for over 30 years now, and he and his band have been delivering a high level of no-frills, classy, and reconstituted American garage rock through all of it. Petty often gets lumped in with artists like Bruce Springsteen, whose careful and worked-over lyrics carry a kind of instant nostalgia, but Petty’s songwriting at its best cleverly bounces off of romance clichés, often with a desperate, lustful drawl and sneer, and he’s usually been more concerned with the here and now than he is about musing about what’s been abused and lost in contemporary America, although he’s certainly not blind to it. Petty has always been more immediate than that — until now, that is. Mojo is Petty’s umpteenth album, and technically the first he’s done with the Heartbreakers since 2002’s sly The Last DJ. This time out he’s tackling the blues, trying to graft the Heartbreakers’ (Mike Campbell on guitar, Scott Thurston on guitar and harmonica, Benmont Tench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, and Steve Ferrone on drums) patented 1960s garage sound to the Chicago blues sound of Chess Records in the 1950s. Sonically it certainly works, mostly because this is a wonderful band, but then it all seems a little tired, worn, and exhausted, too, and not a single song here has that certain desperate, determined defiance that Petty has always delivered in the past with a knowing sneer and a little leering wink. The opener, “Jefferson Jericho Blues,” is a case in point. It starts by being a song about Thomas Jefferson’s dalliance with one of his black maids, and it could have been a scathing indictment of an out-of-date Southern attitude, contemporary racism, and so much more. Instead, it tumbles unfocused into, well, a song about missing a girl and how time moves slow, and one can’t help but wonder why Petty dragged Thomas Jefferson and his maid into any of it in the first place. Petty has never sounded so emotionally drained and detached as a vocalist as he does on this album, and while it’s nice to hear the Heartbreakers flirt with the blues — and to hear Campbell’s clear, precise slide guitar playing — there’s no excuse for not having solid songs to scaffold it. There’s a worn-out, regretful, and boringly meditative tone to so many tracks here — this is not what one expects from a band that rocks as fine as this one can. Again, the playing is solid, but one wishes Petty & the Heartbreakers had simply covered some of those old Chess classics rather than trying half-heartedly to write their own — it would have made for an album closer to intent. ― Allmusic

The setlist reached back to his first recordings with The Yardbirds in 1966 and came right up to date with tracks from his most recent album Loud Hailer.
