Ten Years After was a British blues-rock quartet consisting of Alvin Lee (born December 19, 1944, died March 6, 2013), guitar and vocals; Chick Churchill (born January 2, 1949), keyboards; Leo Lyons (born November 30, 1944) bass; and Ric Lee (born October 20, 1945), drums. The group was formed in 1967 and signed to Decca in England. Their first album was not a success, but their second, the live Undead (1968) containing “I’m Going Home,” a six-minute blues workout by the fleet-fingered Alvin, hit the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Stonedhenge (1969) hit the U.K. Top Ten in early 1969. Ten Years After’s U.S. breakthrough came as a result of their appearance at Woodstock, at which they played a nine-minute version of “I’m Going Home.” Their next album, Ssssh, reached the U.S. Top 20, and Cricklewood Green, containing the hit single “Love Like a Man,” reached number four. Watt completed the group’s Decca contract, after which they signed with Columbia and moved in a more mainstream pop direction, typified by the gold-selling 1971 album A Space in Time and its Top 40 single “I’d Love to Change the World.” Subsequent efforts in that direction were less successful, however, and Ten Years After split up after the release of Positive Vibrations in 1974. They reunited in 1988 for concerts in Europe and recorded their first new album in 15 years, About Time, in 1989 before disbanding once again. In 2001, Ric Lee was preparing the back catalog for re-release when he discovered the Live at the Fillmore East 1970 tapes. He approached Alvin about getting back together to promote the lost album, but Alvin Lee declined. The rest of the band was up for it, though, and together with guitarist Joe Gooch, Ten Years After started touring again. In addition to touring the world, this new incarnation recorded its first new material in about a decade and a half and released Now in 2004 and added the live double CD set Roadworks in 2005. Alvin Lee died on March 6, 2013 at the age of 68 due to complications from a routine surgery. ― Allmusic

Universal Music Enterprises continues its double-disc Gold series with 31 tracks of Steppenwolf. Remastered and featuring extensive liner notes by notable music writer Scott Schinder, Gold is far too much music for listeners who are content with “Born to Be Wild,” “Magic Carpet Ride,” “Sookie Sookie,” and “The Pusher.” The bluesy pub rock of the band’s later years can get a bit repetitive, and the inclusion of three John Kay solo numbers — do you really want to hear another version of “Drift Away”? — seems unnecessary, but Gold is by far the most comprehensive compilation yet of the band that coined the term “heavy metal thunder.” Fans who just want the singles would be better off picking up MCA’s single-disc 16 Greatest Hits. ― Allmusic

After building a solid core audience through relentless touring and a string of hard-rocking albums, Foghat finally hit the big time in 1975 with Fool for the City. It still stands out as the best album in the group’s catalog because it matched their road-tested abilities as hard rockers to a consistent set of tunes that were both well-crafted and ambitious. The tone for the album is set by its title track: This hard-rocking gem not only pairs riff-driven verses with an effective shout-along chorus, but also throws in a few surprising moments where the guitars are taken out of the mix completely and Nick Jameson’s bass is allowed to take the lead in a funky breakdown. Fool for the City also produced an enduring rock radio favorite in “Slow Ride,” a stomping rock tune that transcends the inherent clichés of its “love is like a car ride” lyrics with a furious performance from the band and a clever arrangement that works in well-timed automotive sound effects during the verses and plays up the band’s ability to work an R&B-styled groove into their hard-rocking sound (again, note the thumping bassline from Jameson). Further radio play was earned with “Take It or Leave It,” an acoustic-based ballad that worked synthesizers into its subtle yet carefully layered arrangement to become one of the group’s finest slow numbers. The album’s other songs don’t stand like the aforementioned selections, but they all flow together nicely thanks to a consistently inspired performance from the band and clever little arrangement frills that keep the group’s boogie-oriented rock fresh (example: the witty spoken word bit at the end of “Drive Me Home”). All in all, Fool for the City is both Foghat’s finest achievement in the studio and one of the high points of 1970s hard rock. ― Allmusic

Steppenwolf entered the studio for their recording debut with a lot of confidence — based on a heavy rehearsal schedule before they ever got signed — and it shows on this album, a surprisingly strong debut album from a tight hard rock outfit who was obviously searching for a hook to hang their sound on. The playing is about as loud and powerful as anything being put out by a major record label in 1968, though John Kay’s songwriting needed some development before their in-house repertory would catch up with their sound and musicianship. On this album, the best material came from outside the ranks of the active bandmembers: “Born to Be Wild” by ex-member Mars Bonfire, which became not only a chart-topping high-energy anthem for the counterculture (a status solidified by its use in Dennis Hopper’s movie Easy Rider the following year), but coined the phrase heavy metal, thus giving a genre-specific name to the brand of music that the band played (and which was already manifesting itself in the work of bands like Vanilla Fudge and the just-emerging Led Zeppelin); the Don Covay soul cover “Sookie, Sookie,” which, as a single by the new group, actually got played on some soul stations until they found out that Steppenwolf was white; two superb homages to Chess Records, in the guise of “Berry Rides Again,” written (though “adapted” might be a better word) by Kay based on the work of Chuck Berry, and the Willie Dixon cover “Hoochie Coochie Man”; and Hoyt Axton’s “The Pusher,” an anti-drug song turned into a pounding six-minute tour de force by the band. The rest, apart from the surprisingly lyrical rock ballad “A Girl I Knew,” is by-the-numbers hard rock that lacked much except a framework for their playing; only “The Ostrich” ever comes fully to life among the other originals, but the songs would catch up with the musicianship the next time out.

Prior to the 2015 collection Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy: The Very Best of Bad Company, there were only two Bad Company compilations in release: the lean 1985 set 10 from 6, arriving a full six years after their last hit album, and 1999’s The Original Bad Company Anthology, a 33-track double-disc set that dug deep into the group’s golden years of 1974-1982. Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy occupies a much-needed middle ground, providing 19 songs on a generous single disc. This, like The Original Bad Company Anthology, focuses solely on the six albums Bad Company cut for Swan Song, which means there’s nothing from their late-’80s/early-’90s run on Atco, even though “No Smoke Without a Fire,” “Holy Water,” “If You Needed Somebody,” and “How About That” are also owned by WEA and could easily have been included. So, this is all a matter of aesthetics: a decision to highlight the band’s big, brawny arena rockers, the best of which (“Can’t Get Enough,” “Bad Company,” “Ready for Love,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Shooting Star,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy”) are quintessential classic rock staples. The remaining 13 songs here — including lesser-known singles “Movin’ On,” “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad,” “Honey Child,” and “Gone, Gone, Gone,” along with a representative portion of album cuts — show how Bad Company offered more than those well-known songs, how they moved with a steady macho assurance that stripped British blues-rock down to the loud, churning basics. ― Allmusic

Two years in the making, Santana IV marks the reunion of nearly all members of the 1971-1972 band, arguably its greatest lineup. Carlos Santana, conguero Michael Carabello, organist/lead vocalist Gregg Rolie, drummer Michael Shrieve, and guitarist Neal Schon cut the landmark Santana III in 1971. It was a short-lived group as Schon and Rolie would depart in early 1973 to form Journey. Filling out the lineup are Carlos’ longtime bassist Benny Rietveld and second percussionist Karl Perazza. Unlike the reunions of most classic rockers, this one proves its musical mettle, even when the album gives in to excess. The interplay between the guitarists is fiery, while Rolie and Shrieve have never been less than inspiring. The former is a far better (more expressive) vocalist than he was in his youth.

This output runs the stylistic gamut without compromising Santana’s core sound. Opener “Yambu” is a cooking meld of cumbia, funk, and hard rock. The screaming blues-rock of “Shake It” is the first — but not only — place where Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac is referenced, albeit with percolating Afro-Cuban grooves and salsa chants. In “Blues Magic,” they reference Mac again in a slow, brooding two-chord blues vamp. It would have made a perfect B-side for “Black Magic Woman.” First single “Anywhere You Want to Go” recalls the strutting, swelling toughness of III and Abraxas. “Fillmore East” commences with a silvery nocturnal feel, then evolves into a seven-minute instrumental jam that lets the front line players stretch out. Schon, always a rock technician, makes Carlos work harder than he has in years. “Love Makes the World Go Round” and “Freedom Is in Your Mind” are changes of pace with Ronald Isley on vocals. The former is an R&B-inspired rock jam with cooking percussive layers; the latter a scorching meld of raucous funk and jazz-rock with Yoruban polyrhythms. The instrumental ballad “Sueños” revisits the feel of “Samba Pa Ti,” while “Echizo” touches on the transcendent tropical, melodic jazz fusion of “Song of the Wind” as both guitarists soar. The album should have ended with “Come as You Are,” a celebratory, tropically inspired rocker, but closes instead with “Forgiveness,” a beautiful but long, slow blues that should have been sequenced earlier in the mix.

At over 75 minutes, Santana IV would have benefitted greatly from judicious editing. There is filler here: the classic rock-styled blues raveup in “Choo Choo,” the horn-drenched boogie of “Caiminando,” the tired, Shaman-esque “Leave Me Alone,” and the new agey, smooth jazz-blues fusion of “Leave Me Alone,” all feel like they are ideas rather than finished songs. Flaws aside, IV is quite enjoyable — especially split over a couple of listens. There remains a real musical connection and shared joy between these players. They may not sound young, radical, or reckless, but they do come off as if they never stopped playing and discovering together. ― Allmusic

Over the course of his career, Rod Stewart has had it all. He’s been lauded as the finest singer of his generation, he’s written several songs that turned into modern standards, he sang with the Faces, who rivaled the Rolling Stones in their prime, he had massive commercial success. Stewart also saw his critical respect slip away during the ’80s, when he recorded lightweight pop and although he did record some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart will always be remembered as one of rock & roll’s best interpretive singers as well as an accomplished, innovative songwriter, creating a raw combination of folk, rock, blues, and country that sounded like no other folk-rock or country-rock material. Instead of finding the folk in rock, he found how folk rocked like hell on its own. After Stewart became successful, he began to lose the rootsier elements of his music, yet he remained a superb singer, even as he abandoned his own artistic path in favor of following pop trends. ― Allmusic

Reuniting with producer Glyn Johns, the steady hand who guided Slowhand back in 1977, doesn’t provide Eric Clapton with much of a jolt for his 23rd studio album, but it does provide the veteran guitarist with no small degree of nicely weathered warmth. Such mellowed good vibes are the calling card of I Still Do, which otherwise proceeds along the same path Clapton’s records follow in the 21st century: he blends covers of well-worn blues standards with a couple of J.J. Cale tunes, a few old pop standards, a Bob Dylan chestnut, and original songs that draw upon aspects of all of these. “Spiral” and “Catch the Blues,” the two EC originals that anchor the middle of the album, are handsomely crafted tunes that complement the rest of the record; they don’t draw attention to themselves but rather show how hard “Cypress Grove” swings and how “Alabama Woman Blues” crawls, and reveal the lightness of “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” and “Little Man, You’ve Had a Busy Day.” Although “I’ll Be Seeing You” ends I Still Do on a bit of a wistful note, this album is neither melancholy nor some kind of summation. It is simply Clapton being Clapton, enjoying the company of his longtime band and songs he’s loved, and here he’s fortunate enough to be produced by Johns, whose expert touch gives this weight and color absent from the otherwise amiable Old Sock. That’s enough to give I Still Do some resonance because Johns focuses not on the songs but the interplay: it’s not a vibe record so much as it’s an album about the interplay of old pros who still get a kick playing those same old changes years after they’ve become second nature. ― Allmusic

The Band’s first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group’s second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, partially because the players had become a more cohesive unit, and partially because guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing or co-writing all 12 songs. Though a Canadian, Robertson focused on a series of American archetypes from the union worker in “King Harvest (Has Surely Come)” and the retired sailor in “Rockin’ Chair” to, most famously, the Confederate Civil War observer Virgil Cane in “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” The album effectively mixed the kind of mournful songs that had dominated Music from Big Pink, here including “Whispering Pines” and “When You Awake” (both co-written by Richard Manuel), with rollicking uptempo numbers like “Rag Mama Rag” and “Up on Cripple Creek” (both sung by Levon Helm and released as singles, with “Up on Cripple Creek” making the Top 40). As had been true of the first album, it was the Band’s sound that stood out the most, from Helm’s (and occasionally Manuel’s) propulsive drumming to Robertson’s distinctive guitar fills and the endlessly inventive keyboard textures of Garth Hudson, all topped by the rough, expressive singing of Manuel, Helm, and Rick Danko that mixed leads with harmonies. The arrangements were simultaneously loose and assured, giving the songs a timeless appeal, while the lyrics continued to paint portraits of 19th century rural life (especially Southern life, as references to Tennessee and Virginia made clear), its sometimes less savory aspects treated with warmth and humor. ― Allmusic

Steve Miller had started to essay his classic sound with The Joker, but 1976’s Fly Like an Eagle is where he took flight, creating his definitive slice of space blues. The key is focus, even on an album as stylishly, self-consciously trippy as this, since the focus brings about his strongest set of songs (both originals and covers), plus a detailed atmospheric production where everything fits. It still can sound fairly dated — those whooshing keyboards and cavernous echoes are certainly of their time — but its essence hasn’t aged, as “Fly Like an Eagle” drifts like a cool breeze, while “Take the Money and Run” and “Rock ‘n Me” are fiendishly hooky, friendly rockers. The rest of the album may not be quite up to those standards, but there aren’t any duds, either, as “Wild Mountain Honey” and “Mercury Blues” give this a comfortable backdrop, thanks to Miller’s offhand, lazy charm. Though it may not quite transcend its time, it certainly is an album rock landmark of the mid-’70s and its best moments (namely, the aforementioned singles) are classics of the idiom. ― Allmusic

While most bands undergo a number of changes over the course of their careers, few groups experienced such radical stylistic changes as Fleetwood Mac. Initially conceived as a hard-edged British blues combo in the late ’60s, the band gradually evolved into a polished pop/rock act over the course of a decade. Throughout all of their incarnations, the only consistent members of Fleetwood Mac were drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie — the rhythm section that provided the band with its name. Ironically, they had the least influence over the musical direction of the band. Originally, guitarists Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer provided the band with its gutsy, neo-psychedelic blues-rock sound, but as both guitarists descended into mental illness, the group began moving toward pop/rock with the songwriting of pianist Christine McVie. By the mid-’70s, Fleetwood Mac had relocated to California, where they added the soft rock duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to their lineup. Obsessed with the meticulously arranged pop of the Beach Boys and the Beatles, Buckingham helped the band become one of the most popular groups of the late ’70s. Combining soft rock with the confessional introspection of singer/songwriters, Fleetwood Mac created a slick but emotional sound that helped 1977’s Rumours become one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. The band retained its popularity through the early ’80s, when Buckingham, Nicks, and Christine McVie all began pursuing solo careers. The band reunited for one album, 1987’s Tango in the Night, before splintering in the late ’80s. Buckingham left the group initially, but the band decided to soldier on, releasing one other album before Nicks and McVie left the band in the early ’90s, hastening the group’s commercial decline. –Allmusic

October 1975 Broadcast recording by the new Fleetwood Mac. The recording on this CD, a show performed in October 75 by the Mac-McVie-McVie- Buckingham-Nicks line up, three months after the release of their first album together, is an early illustration of the new Fleetwood Mac in their initial phase. Their eponymously titled album had not at this point charted and the single Over My Head had only reached No. 20 on Billboard. However, listening to this broadcast concert today it is not difficult to understand how it was that within another year Fleetwood Mac would be among the biggest rock bands on the planet. ― Amazon

Greatest Hits was the first hits compilation package from the rock band Fleetwood Mac, covering the period from the band’s beginning in 1968 to 1971, mostly in its original incarnation led by guitarist Peter Green. Part of the second British blues boom of the late 1960s, Fleetwood Mac enjoyed several hit singles in the UK, collated here for this album issued on CBS Records only in the UK, but available in the US as an import.

The single “Black Magic Woman” received exposure in the US via a cover by the San Francisco group Santana, who placed their version in the Billboard Top 40.

Long out of print, it has been replaced on compact disc by the 2002 compilation The Best of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac on the Sony International label, which now owns the Columbia/CBS catalogue.

A very similar release with the same title and same cover was released by Sony BMG in 1989, but consisted of the tracks from The Pious Bird of Good Omen plus “Shake Your Moneymaker” and “Love That Burns”.

The album gatefold shows a full-size photo of the post-Green line up of the band with Christine McVie (née Perfect), even though she just plays piano on a couple of tracks and was not a full member until after Kiln House was released.

“The Green Manalishi”, “Oh Well”, “Rattlesnake Shake”, and “Dragonfly” were licensed from Warner (then Kinney) and “Man of the World” from Immediate; the others were on Blue Horizon originally.

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is a film released in 1996 of an 11 December 1968 event organized by the Rolling Stones. The event comprised two concerts on a circus stage and included such acts as the Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and Jethro Tull. John Lennon and his fiancee Yoko Ono performed as part of a supergroup called the Dirty Mac , along with Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Richards. The original line up was going to be the Faces, the Rolling Stones and the Who and the concept of a circus was first thought up between Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane and was originally meant to be aired on the BBC, but the Rolling Stones withheld it. The Stones contended they did so due to their substandard performance, because they had taken the stage early in the morning and were clearly exhausted.[citation needed] Many others believe that the true reason for not releasing the video was that the Who, who were fresh off a concert tour, upstaged the Stones on their own production. Led Zeppelin were also originally considered but the idea was also dropped.

Joe Cocker’s debut album holds up extraordinarily well across four decades, the singer’s performance bolstered by some very sharp playing, not only by his established sideman/collaborator Chris Stainton, but also some top-notch session musicians, among them drummer Clem Cattini, Steve Winwood on organ, and guitarists Jimmy Page and Albert Lee, all sitting in. It’s Cocker’s voice, a soulful rasp of an instrument backed up by Madeline Bell, Sunny Weetman and Rossetta Hightower that carries this album and makes “Change in Louise,” “Feeling Alright,” “Just Like a Woman,” “I Shall Be Released,” and even “Bye Bye Blackbird” into profound listening experiences. But the surprises in the arrangements, tempo, and approaches taken help make this an exceptional album. Tracks like “Just Like a Woman,” with its soaring gospel organ above a lean textured acoustic and light electric accompaniment, and the guitar-dominated rendition of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” — the formal debut of the Grease Band on record — all help make this an exceptional listening experience. The 1999 A&M reissue not only includes new notes and audiophile-quality sound, but also a pair of bonus tracks, the previously unanthologized B-sides “The New Age of Lily” and “Something Coming On,” deserved better than the obscurity in which they previously dwelt. ― Allmusic

The original leaders of Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, were well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock’s most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov’t Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers’ influence was apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power trio feel of Cream. ― Allmusic
